Waukegans fire chief says the hotel, which had been a major tourist attraction and a popular spot for music festivals, had been burning for days, with smoke pouring from the roof.
Officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
A large fire has also been burning in the city of Wausau, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) west of downtown Wausaur.
Wausau police have issued a warning to motorists that smoke from the fire is “very dangerous.”
The city of more than 7,000 people had only two other fires in its history.
The Waukena Fire Department issued a statement Friday morning, saying it was responding to a reported suspicious fire.
The department says the building is being assessed by the National Capital Fire Protection Agency.
