Sheraton, a luxury hotel chain, said it will become one of the first luxury hotels in the world to become an official member of the Global City 2025 Initiative, a project to build more sustainable cities around the world.
The hotel, based in Washington, D.C., will become an ambassador for the initiative, which will encourage people around the globe to make their own choices about where to live, work and play.
The initiative is an effort to provide an avenue to invest in sustainable cities and to help cities make better choices around the amenities and services they offer, said Mark C. McDaniel, Sheraton’s chief executive officer.
He called the move “a big deal.”
The announcement comes a month after Sheraton announced plans to spend $3.5 billion on a new office building in New York City and $2.5 million to create the first sustainable office park in the United States.
McDaniel also said Sheraton will spend $500 million to promote green living in the U.S.
The company also said it is developing the first fully sustainable kitchen in the country.
The announcement will also see the company expand into an outdoor shopping center.
In 2019, Sheriton partnered with the National Park Service to create an outdoor mall in the northernmost part of the park, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
The park, named in honor of its namesake, is home to more than 30 million acres of prime, open-air terrain and boasts more than 1,000 miles of trails, trails, waterfalls, wildlife viewing points and wildlife preserves.
Sheraton is a subsidiary of Hilton Hotels International.
